Handlining was actually invented on the Detroit River in the 1940's. Handliners pull wire on a reel that is spring loaded. The wire is connected on the business end with what is called a shank that has a 1-2 pound weight on the end. The shank has four adjustable snap swivels in which leads are hooked.
